🗿 Exotica Soloing Concepts 🍹

Exotica is a lush, cinematic style that mixes jazz, vintage pop and music from around the world, It’s like a soundtrack to a place that doesn't exist. I find it really fun and inspiring music to write and improvise over.

Artists like Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Chaino, Arthur Lyman and Juan García Esquivel pioneered this style. The masterclass will include a playlist of some of my favorite Exotica compositions.

🎸 We're going to work through a solo study using one of my tunes, Forbidden Village, as the backdrop.

🔥 We’ll start by talking through the concepts used in the solo study. Things like — using chromatic mediants, making lush chord voicings, sidestepping and superimposing changes. These are some of the tools that give Exotica that dreamy, mysterious sound.

Then I’ll be breaking down the solo study solo you can see how each concept is being used in a performance. Finally I’ll open it up for a live Q&A.

You get notation, TAB, and a backing track.

If you can't make the live date, no problem — it's filmed in HD and as long as you’re enrolled you can rewatch it whenever works for you.
